History and Background of the Firm

Edward Thomas Peirson founded the firm in Coventry during the late 1800’s. He was one of the first members of Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales when it received its Royal Charter in 1880. Subsequently, several generations of the Peirson family served the firm and its clients.

The Market Harborough branch office was opened in the 1930’s on the High Street and always had at least one partner in permanent residence. The local partners purchased the business from the Coventry practice in the 1960’s and the Coventry firm merged with others and is now part of RSM.

The Market Harborough practice has been proud to continue to operate under the name of our illustrious founder though various changes of partners.

The firm continues to maintain a tradition of family values and the current senior partner, Adrian Bentley, is the second generation within the firm following his father, Alan, who was a partner from 1958 until his retirement in 1999.

Adrian has a degree in Mathematics from Durham University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985 with the firm that is now KPMG in Leicester. After a year’s secondment to the firm’s technical department in London, he became an audit manager before leaving in 1989 to join the Edward Thomas Peirson & Sons partnership.

The other current partner in the firm is Simon Faire who has a degree in Economics, also from Durham University, and qualified with KPMG in Leicester, which is where he met Adrian. Simon also has experience on secondment with KPMG in the Bahamas before becoming part of the audit management team in Leicester. After a spell in the financial services industry, Simon started his own practice which he then merged with Edward Thomas Peirson & Sons.

The partners are joined by an experienced team of nine professionals which include a retired partner, John Parton, as a consultant and Adrian’s wife Katherine, who is also another KPMG trained Chartered Accountant. The firm is an approved training office for both the ICAEW and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and we currently have two in-house trained Certified Accountants.

We relocated from the High Street to new offices at The Point in February 2007.

Our Clients and Our Services

The firm has a wide and varied client base ranging from people who require our services to assist with their personal taxation affairs through self-employed individuals and partnerships to owner-managed limited companies, charities/not-for-profit organisations and trusts.

Our objective is to provide our clients with a friendly and efficient service which can be adapted and flexed to suit their individual requirements. Unlike larger firms, who may offer a “one size fits all” service, we pride ourselves on being prepared and able to adapt to our clients’ needs. At one extreme this may be straightforward compliance with audit and tax requirements and at the other extreme, we offer full bookkeeping and payroll services, using Sage accounting and payroll software, with monthly management accounts and regular meetings to provide help and guidance to our clients in the day to day management of their businesses. We are pleased to tailor our services accordingly for those clients who prefer something between these two extremes and to adapt the service through the life cycle of their business. For example, we offer advice on start-ups, forecasting/projections and succession planning.

The partners look to build long-term relationships with their clients and, unlike some firms who make charges for every meeting or telephone call, we never discourage clients from seeking our advice.

The firm is structured as a general practice and we offer a full range of taxation advice covering Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Corporation Tax and VAT. If advice is required beyond our expertise we have links to a number of specialists who are able to help.

We offer general advice on a range of investment business activities but we are not authorised to give advice on specific investment products, however, we have links with a number of IFA’s who are able to provide this service to our clients in conjunction with us.

To ensure that we remain technically up to date, we are members of the Mercia Group which is one of the UK’s largest providers of training and support services to independent accountancy practices. We use the Mercia Audit and Procedures Manual to ensure that our audit work is carried out to a high standard and submit a sample of our files to them for an annual quality control review.

Accounts and tax returns are produced using IRIS software, which is the market leader in the UK for accountancy practice software, and which is regularly updated and fully compliant with HMRC online filing.

In conclusion, we strive to provide our clients with friendly and traditional service, reflecting the firm’s long history, whilst ensuring that we remain fully up to date with the ever-changing financial world.
